The Last Post

(of the year)

Well, 2020 was interesting, wasn't it?

COVID-19 took hold and spread across the world as a global pandemic, killing ~1.8m in its first full year. My prediction is that unless we globally lock down until suppressed, we will see many more, deadlier waves of this terrible disease for many years to come.

Brexit and the trade deal finally happens at 2300 tonight. What an unmitigated disaster. My only solace will be pointing out to the breximorons how their lives have been made worse due to their pig-ignorant, fascist and jingoistic votes.

Arise Sir Lewis

Fantastic news that Lewis Hamilton is being knighted in this year's New Year's honours. Fully deserved IMHO, and should have been done much sooner. He is an inspiration to all with his professionalism and his courage in his activism to promote BLM. Well done Lewis.

Jimmy Greaves

Another honour in the list is an MBE for Jimmy Greaves.I think it's also deserved and presents me with the perennial opportunity to bring out the photo of me with my arm around the fella - just before he told me that he used to have to drink half a bottle of vodka to be able to get out of bed in the mornings! Yikes!

A Sad Day for Britain

And now darkness descends over the once-great Britain. The toilet-paper-thin Brexit deal has been signed by the UK parliament after having only a single day top read and digest the 1500+ pages contained within. Only a draft version was posted tot he government website, so the public couldn't see just how bad the actual version was.

And now we are subjected to this deal and are at the mercy of the idiots who currently lead this country.

Never have I been more ashamed to call myself a Brit.

When the war starts, it's fairly easy to see where the dividing lines will be. And some members of my family are on the wrong side.

Book Review - Hunt Them Down

Hunt Them Down (Pierce Hunt, #1)Hunt Them Down by Simon Gervais
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It was a no-thinking thriller that ticked most of the boxes, but it felt like a sausage-machine book churned out to flood the market with ex-Private Military Contractor macho-men for middle-aged guys who still think they're 25 and tough.
This one also seemed to skip parts of the narrative and then covers them off quickly in a prefix to a new chapter - i.e. It jumped to a new chapter and then told you that in the meantime character x had thought about getting ammo, bulletproof vests, etc. - it all felt like the author had suddenly remembered the gaps in the detail and lazily just put them in as an afterthought rather than re-write it into the proper storyline.
It was OK though, and certainly not a waste of a few quid. Just nothing special.

Christmas Day

Well, it came and went without a major hitch. Ken and Wendy came around for lunch, and we had a Zoom call with Aunt Christine and her family.

We then did a socially-distance meeting with Josh outside his flat, where we noticed a flock of birds do a Top-Gun-esque fly-by down his road. It was particularly amazing because the birds were bright green and blue. Then they flew past again, and we realised that they were too big for budgies, and were parakeets! Seemingly living wild in Plymouth...

When I came home, I discovered that Parakeets do, in fact, live wild in the UK and that there is a known population in Plymouth. Amazing!

Yet another example of global warming.

We then visited Dad and Trevor and spent an hour with them - although Trevor wasn't that interested in us - seemingly just wanting to sleep on his cat food box in the dining room!

An Provisional Application for a Post-Brexit Deal Has Been Agreed

It's NOT a deal, but a provisional application for a deal - it still needs to be ratified by the EU.

But whilst a provisional application hints at a deal, and any deal (at this stage) is better than none, we should not be celebrating this. It is objectively worse than the position we were in when in the EU.

Remember that the Tories sold out yours and your family's future for the sake of an election and to remain in power (oh, and Ree Smog stands to make hundreds of millions of pounds by betting on currency).

Yet, the morons who subscribe to and read the fascist newspapers comics owned by Rupert Murdoch or the Barclay Brothers will lap up their lies and vote for the very people who are hurting them again.

They are like turkeys voting for Christmas!

507 Miles

Well, here we are 507 miles later with Daryl in our house. What a journey!

Actually, as expected due to the lockdown, the road were fairly quiet - but the weather was absolutely terrible.

But no checks at the borders, or anything to do with COVID that was out of the ordinary.

Josh & Christmas

Josh had originally planned to come around to ours this Christmas.
He lives on his own in a tiny student bedsit.

Josh's Bedsit is quite cold

But Josh has been making us all very proud this year by becoming qualified and then running with the South West Ambulance Service on behalf of St. John Ambulance.

Because he did a shift on Sunday, we have agreed that the safe and sensible thing to do is for Josh not to come around to ours this Christmas. It's a tough decision but for the sake of our vulnerable family - Teri, Wendy, Ken & Sam, we believe it is the right thing to do.

We will be taking him around a full Christmas dinner via DeliverDad™.

I honestly couldn't be prouder of his sacrifice this year - to give up his time for free, and to put others first.

That is the true spirit of Christmas.

I am an incredibly proud Dad.

Unfortunately, Josh, in his pursuit of helping others comes under a lot of attack on Social Media. However, he's strong and just bats away the idiots.

However, these constant snipes can have a negative affect the mental health of our wonderful people in the NHS.

I've reported this particular troll, and I ask that you do the same wherever you see this nonsense.

Smash & Grab

Road trip today! Normally that's a big Yay!, but this one is filled with a little concern.

Today Kim and I are travelling to Bristol to stay the night before we venture into the badlands of Wales tomorrow to go on a smash and grab to pick up Daryl.

We've done our research and due diligence, and because Daryl is a single adult household, and vulnerable due to his disabilities, he can join our bubble over Christmas.

Kim and I don't plan to leave the car at any point while we are in Wales, so we will not be spreading anything and will not be susceptible to anything apart from Daryl getting in the car - and he's effectively been in isolation for weeks!

Here goes!

Border Closed

France has shut down the border between the UK and France. This gives the EU time to consider what further action needs to be taken.

Naturally, our people in the UK are totally OK with this, and understand the need to contain a new more transmissible form of the COVID-19 virus.

Only joking - Everyone here is losing their minds about it.

Eurotunnel has closed one-way - the direction into France, so while goods can still get here on driven lorries, those drivers will be stranded in the UK until the tunnel reopens.

The fears that most sane people have about food and medicines stopping because of Brexit are being played out in front of our eyes in some kind of perverse dress-rehearsal.

France is absolutely right to do this - it's what the UK should have done in February - shut the borders until we can work out the best course of action.

Christmas is Cancelled

What a joke this Tory government is...

Just 72 hours after saying cancelling Christmas would be inhuman, Boris Johnson U-turns (AGAIN!) and effectively cancels Christmas.

It wouldn't be so bad, but having built people up and telling them that we'd be having a five day break period from restrictions (a mind-bogglingly bad idea!), people had made plans, booked travel, bought masses of food, etc. Only for it all to go to shit a few days before Christmas Day.

But, I also wonder what Muslims people think off the outcry - they have been through two EIDs and a Ramadan (so far!) in this pandemic but it's only when it's a Christian celebration that everyone gets upset...

Also, this...

Book Review - Going Rogue

Going RogueGoing Rogue by Neil Lancaster
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It felt like a sequel to a film, which tried a bit too hard to live up to the blockbuster.
But, that being said, it was still an enjoyable read, with not too much thought required - which is exactly the kind of read I was after.

It would seems that I was correct in my estimation that sacking Arsene Wenger would not improve Arsenal Football Club's standings nor their chances of silverware.

Despite being told many times by people who also told me that they knew more about football than I do that it was right to sack Arsene, Arsenal have gone from bad to worse.

Arsene should never have been treated that way after his many years of service and successes at Arsenal.

I am just glad that it made me open my eyes and realise that watching a bunch of millionaires kicking a ball around a field was a fools errand.

Brexit is a Doomsday Cult

Brexiters are exactly like Doomsday Cult members - when the day comes and their glorious projections of betterment don't come true, they'll blame their watches, the calendar, the EU - everyone apart from their own story that everyone else saw as the Emperor's New Clothes. Of course we'll crash out with no deal - as soon as any deal was written down, people would be able to see that it was objectively worse than staying IN the EU.

US Election

Here's what I think happened:

Russia, under Putin's direction, tried to re-install Trump as the President (impeached), but had to make it a close-run thing so as not to arouse suspicion. The gamble failed due to the sheer number of voters this year, and although Putin got Trump 74 million voters, it wasn't enough to beat Biden's 81 million votes. Trump can't believe that Putin has failed to win the election for him and is now throwing his toys out of the pram and doing everything to cause chaos and disruption to the peaceful transfer of power. Yes, the US elections were rigged, but not in favour of Biden...
