RIP Mum (Wendy)

Wendy Maureen Parker 13 February 1946 - 26 February 2021

Rest in Peace Mum. Kim's biological mother, my mother-in-law, passed away today at 10:40.

She died peacefully at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth with Kim and her husband, Ken at her side.

We knew this was coming since she had her strokes in early February, but it is still heart breaking 😒

Microsoft Edge

I had put off my move to MS Edge as my default browser across all platforms because the Linux version doesn't allow you to sign-in and sync the favourites/settings. However, I've decided it's time to persevere with it a little bit.

I love that the tabs go to sleep when not being used - that's a great feature!

"The Gay Disease"

During this pandemic 😷 (Covid-19 if you're reading this from the future (or past! 🤔)), one of the things I've learned is why we don't yet have a vaccine for HIV/AIDS after 40 years, is that it was always seen as "The Gay Disease" and therefore, Western Governments would not put money into researching vaccines for something they saw as only killing "the wrong'uns".

I find that shocking and unsurprising in equal measure! They (incorrectly) thought that a disease that "only" kills thousands of gay men wasn't worth funding a vaccine for...

But, did you also know that the reason for so many gay men since the 1980s being so fit (in every sense of the word) and buff is because they realised that HIV/AIDS was killing the weakest and unhealthiest of their community first. It was literally survival of the fittest. So many gay men at the time got fit, joined gyms, and improved their health in an effort to stave off death from the virus.

That stereotype of gay men in tank tops pumping iron came about because society had cast them aside and they were literally fighting for their lives to remain healthy.

We must never allow this discrimination to happen again. Ever.

Bird Flu

So, Russia has detected the first case of H5N8 bird flu in humans.

It says that all seven people are "now feeling fine".

But, - and I'm about to dangerously enter the realm of old trope and stereotypes here - haven't we heard these messages from Russia and China before? Everything's OK. Nothing to see here. Move on. Only for a pandemic to break out, or a family is poisoned to death...

I feel that this one needs further attention.

Always Check

Always check the label on your (or in this case, your family's) tablets match the actual box of tablets.

This could have been fatal.

Giddy with Power

The back lane of Healy Place, near to where we live, is actually used far more than you might expect. People often have trouble passing here due to the thin lane and the cars parked at either end which prevent you from seeing what's coming up/down the lane.

Recently, there's been some underground subsidence and, well, the road has become like an off-road trail (the photo doesn't do that justice).

So I reported it to Plymouth City Council - on their website for such things - and within a week, they'd surveyed it and said that it is a Health & Safety issue and needs to be resolved in 3 weeks.

These signs went up earlier this week.

I am amazed that more people don't know that most councils have a facility online whereby you can report potholes and road problems (including signage) and get it fixed. The PCC one is excellent and they've always been really responsive to me. I have had traffic islands and crossings installed on Albert Road, about half-a-dozen potholes filled and now this road repaired. I advise everyone to do it.

WHO Dunnit?

Slightly worried that the WHO dashboard for the UK COVID-19 figures hasn't been updated since Friday. The update date has been, but the UK figures themselves haven't changed.

What's going on?
