Golf

About 4 weeks ago, during my security brief (yet another one 🙄) at work, the Chief Engineering giving the brief asked me if I played golf. I told him that I have a set of bats under the stairs that I keep meaning to get out and brush off but never get around to doing it.

Well, that weekend I did.

I've been going to the driving range for a few weeks now and I've even ventured out on the local pitch and putt course.

And I'm not doing too bad...

Using the radar at the driving range and the app linked to the computer, I played the old course at St Andrews today. Only to muck about really - it was always going to be a horrendous score, but I did score par on the 16th and 18th!

I'm quite chuffed with that.

Book Review - The Crazy Busy Cure

The Crazy Busy Cure: A productivity book for people who don’t have time to read productivity booksThe Crazy Busy Cure: A productivity book for people who don’t have time to read productivity books by Zena Everett
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Like most management and/or productivity books, this one excels in telling you what you should or probably do already know - plan your time, use your phone more for calling than apps, don't get distracted, etc.
But I like the easy reading style, the slightly light-hearted and sincere approach that Zena Everett takes here.
It's very up to date covering WfH and the pandemic and offer tips and tools for dealing with those in a professional capacity.
I really enjoyed reading it.

RIP Sean Lock

Such a shame to hear that Sean Lock succumbed to cancer today at the age of 58.

A great comedian - his humour was hard and sometime obtuse, but it was his act - he was a kind and loving man by all accounts. A bloody great mind.

Afghanistan

What a mess in Afghanistan. The USA went in with bluster and bravado, yet no plan. Our lapdog government followed, yapping at their ankles. No plan was developed once there. Millions are dead for nothing. For shame.

For my American friends keeping count. The last war you 'won' was against us in 1783 (which we levelled up in 1812)...

And the poor refugees will try to come here - only to be turned away by a dis-compassionate Tory "government" and flag shaggers fuelled by the right-wingnut media. Without any hint of irony that IT'S THEIR FAULT!!

It's remarkably simple. The MAJORITY of Afghans did not want our brand of government and democracy. Once again, #ReligionPoisonsEverything. That is why 20 years of 'us' being there was undone in just over 1 week. This is not difficult to understand, is it?

Keyham Shootings

Today we remember those who senselessly lost their lives in the events that shook Keyham in Plymouth last night.

The worst mass shooting in the UK in over a decade.

Such a tragedy.

Book Review - A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow! Just Wow!
This is certainly the longest book I've read in my adult life. It's taken me 3 months to read it, but I couldn't put it down.
I've never watched any of the GoT series, but I assumed the book must be good to make such a blockbuster show - I was NOT disappointed!
I was hesitant because I'm not into D&D or fantasy stuff as a rule, and after reading it, I'd say that this book feels more like a historical tale set in a parallel universe with a soupçon of fantasy thrown in. I pictured middle ages kings, knights and people.
It's really blimmin' good!
Very, very good!

Climate Emergency

Today I saw a lot of banners on the motorway bridges raising awareness of our climate emergency. They were manned by friendly folk who waved to me as I passed under. I smiled and waved back or gave them the thumbs up as I realised that I was the problem...

Yes, today I travelled to Bristol and back in a car, on my own, just to pick up a laptop. Damn.

Life Advice

I ordered a nose and ear hair trimmer from Amazon. It came from China.

It's OK but the life advice on the box is golden!

Good Fit

Expleo feels like it's going to be a good fit for me. I went to the office in Bristol for inductions (and to pick up my temporary company car) and met the team.

Good fun, hard working people - A slightly distorted sense of humour which absolutely suits me - wait until I get the Googly Eyes out and stick them to their equipment...

I think I'll like it here...

Maskless Morons

Luckily my train seat reservation was a table seat on my own - I'm writing this from that very table now.

However, the maskless morons abound - and the spaces opposite me which are less than 1m away have been taken up by a young couple who seem to have more money than sense - they're "beautiful people" and have the latest Apple kit, Versace bags, etc.

I'm simmering with rage at them...

On my way

I'm on the train to Bristol to meet Katy (PM), Richard (Chief Engineer) and John (Software Developer) to introduce me to my new role. I'm really excited.

Oh, and I pick up my 'temporary' company car, a Seat Ibiza FR sport tomorrow to drive home in...
